- the day after i've bought it i accidentaly destroy the power supply with a
- short circuit caused by inserting the monitor connector while the was on.. in
- jennuary i had it repaired and everything seems to work well..
-
- after having it repaired i install os 3.1 with a developper kit.. (40.70 file
- put in devs, with 3.0 wb given me by a friend.. i know it's not legal but
- here in italy it's damn hard to find a 3.1 kit and it cost about 200$).. again
- no problem. the system is stable as a mountain and i have all the 3.1 features
-
- 2 days ago i finally manage to buy a 350 megs scsi 2 fujitsu hd and after
- reading everything i've found on scsi chains and bugging everyone on
- comp.sys.amiga.hardware (thanks warren block!!) i tried myself in the
- installation.. i'm not a novice to this kind of things so i was quite sure of
- what i was doing..
-
- the original configuration was like the scheme below:
-
-
- F-----------------------F-------M
- | | |
- hard disk mother board not used
- (Quantum) scsi id 7
- scsi id 6
-
- F=female connector
- M=male connector
-
- notice that, the mother board was not terminated and everything was working
- well!! (thanks to short cable, i think).. the quantum drive was terminated i
- suppose as i had no user manual to check..
-
- i say that the scsi host adapter on the mb was not therminated because the
- sips socket (8 holes) named rp802, rp803, rp804 (i'm not sure about this last
- one, the last number was covered by the scsi connector) were empty.
-
- so i bought a new 50 pins scsi cable 30 inches long with 4 connectors to
- replace the old one and decided to adopt this configuration for the scsi
- chain:
-
- F-------------------F-------------------F-------------------F
- | | | |
- | | | |
- quantum hd a3000 host adapter not fujitsu hd
- scsi id 0 scsi id 7 used scsi id 1
- terminated not terminated teminated
-
- i changed the scsi id to speed up the recognization of hd's at the boot..
-
- after doing all the mechanical part i powered the amiga, the new hd was
- recognized by hdtoolbox, i changed the scsi ids as i wanted also giving the
- reselection flag to the fujitsu as it supports fast synchronous transfers. (i
- also actived the last scsi id flag to prevent scanning of the scsi bus for
- other peripherals as there aren't any more..)
-
- i was happy!! i decided to create only a partition of 350 mb, i formatted the
- hd, and proceded to the copy of about 70 mb of software out of aminet i used
- to store on floppies!! and with no errors...
-
- diskspeed gave 1.5 mb/s as speed results.. wow!!
-
- so what's the problem?!?, you may ask...
-
- i did this in the morning.. in the afternoon the first thing i noticed was
- that the clock i always have on the wb bar with MCP was always showing the
- time it reads from the internal clock at the boot.. but the clock works
- because at every boot the hour is correct.. the buttons in the toolmanager
- docks i use were no more selectable after the first selection (i mean after
- i've launched a program from a dock, the other buttons of the same dock are
- locked, and this for every dock i have).. diropus has problems in renewing
- the directory lists after a while i use.. term has problems in the transfer
- windows not showing correctly the cps speed rate (it shows the size of file
- alredy received) and other minor things never seen before the new hd.
-
- i repeat that the hd seems to work all right but now diskspeed reads a speed
- inferior to 1 byte/s.. something must be wrong!!!
-
- i opened my amiga again, tried every possible scsi chain, id, correct or wrong
- (not the ids as they must always be different) and everything worked (also
- with not terminated scsi chain!!) as told: i mean with the problems i've
- mentioned..
-
- i even tried to restore the original config with no result.. i even used the
- old cable, restored the 'out of the fabbric' startup sequence, removed any
- commodity, booted up my amiga with 2.0 kick and wb but the result is always
- the same.
-
- i also noticed (as i was desperated, i started to check everything!!) that the
- video cable i was using was not insulated as one cable wire was disconnected
- (i said every kind of blasfemies, remembering the power supply damage that
- costed me 125$!!!!).. i soldered it again to eartn..
-
- finally, i tried to print something for my mother.. as i powered the printer
- the amiga locked!!! i have to reboot and power off the printer to have it
- working again.. this happens also if i switch on the printer first and then
- the amiga.. notice that the power supply doesn't switch in protectio mode as
- it does if there's a short circuit somewhere.. simply the amiga locks.. (the
- power leds reduces it's intensity).
-
- thanks god (or the devil, i don't know) the modem works!!
-
- HELP ME!!! I'M DEPRESSED..
-
- i can supply every kind of infos you want on the system, scsi chain, whatever.
- answer quickly if you can because i fear to cause a major damage to my beloved
- amiga!!
